Belgium has modern infrastructures. Due to its geographical location at the crossroads with several countries, Belgium Is often transited by foreign hauliers. According to Eurostat figures, in 2018 transporters from the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, France and Luxembourg accounted for 68.2% of the international transport tonne-kilometres performed by foreign hauliers on Belgian territory (latest data available).
In 2018, Belgium's transport volume in the road freight sector amounted to approximately 32.6 billion tonne-kilometers according to Statista. In the same year, 285 million tonnes of goods were transported by road by vehicles registered in Belgium (Statbel, latest data available).
The main ports are Antwerp, Gent, Ostend. Antwerp is by far the most important Belgian port and is ranked second in Europe, while Liege is the third largest river port. Belgium has the second most extensive canal network in Europe and benefits from modern road and rail networks. Statbel figures show that in 2019 the total quantity of goods unloaded in Belgian sea ports increased to almost 152 million tonnes, and the quantity of loaded goods increased to 126 million tonnes.Zaventem airport (Brussels Airport) is by far the most important in terms of freight traffic in the country. In 2018, close to 543,500 tons of cargo were transported through this airport.
