Main Useful Means of Transport: While Ireland has more paved roads on a per capita basis than any other country in the European Union, it lacks an efficient network of highways. 96% of all inland passenger transport and over 90% of inland freight transport are conveyed by road. The two main ports are in Dublin and Castletownbere. Irish ports handled 53.2 million tonnes of goods in 2019. Goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to 17.8 million tonnes in 2019, while a total of 35.4 million tonnes of goods were received (Central Statistics Office). In the same year, a total of 159.4 million tonnes of goods was transported by road, while the country's main airports handled a total of 145,950 tonnes of freight.
