Main Useful Means of Transport: Switzerland has a road network around 73,000km long (of which 1,462 km of motorways), 5,200km of railway lines, a 21,500km public transport network and 1,000km of mountain railways. The country has three international airports (Zurich, Geneva and Basel), 11 regional airports, 49 airfields and 24 heliports (Swiss government figures).

Being a landlocked country, the vast majority of goods being transported in and out of Switzerland do so by road and rail. According to the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office, in 2018 these two modes of transport generated a transport performance of 27.9 billion tonne-kilometres. During the same year, 63% of transport performance on land was generated by road vehicles (95% of which was accounted for by heavy goods transport by lorries and road tractors), 37% by rail. In transalpine goods transport, the share of rail transport was considerably higher at 70%.
In import and export traffic, airfreight, Rhine shipping and oil pipelines are also significant components besides road and rail transport: 4.7 million tonnes transited on the Rhine in 2018, while oil pipelines accounted for 3.9 million tonnes. Goods carried by air stood at only 0.5 million tonnes (including freight and post).
